In short, Legal Nurse Consultants (LNC's) make life easier for law firms working on medical-legal matters. According to the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC), LNCs have been helping law firms since the 1980s in a variety of roles:

  • Medical Record Review: LNC's can help organize and make sense of complex and lengthy medical records. They can also help identify gaps in the medical record and analysis of the information in the medical record.

  • Chronologies: LNC's can help summarize medical records, ensuring the information is in chronological order and citing the original document for use as a reference during the litigation process.

  • Expert Witness: Some LNC's who have the experience and expertise required serve as expert witnesses in cases related to their area of expertise. LNC's can also assist in locating expert witnesses who are qualified to testify on standards of care that are related to a specific case.

  • Research: LNC's can help with medical research--identifying relevant research articles and studies in the extant medical literature that support the law firm's case.

  • Life Care Planning: LNC's with specialized training and experience can help in the development of Life Care Plans--identifying future care needs and calculating the costs.

  • Initial Evalulation of merit of case based on the required elements of a medically-related tort claim.

These are just a few of the ways that nurses can assist in Medical-Legal cases. With their clinical knowledge and background, nurses can be invaluable members of the legal team in medically-related legal areas such as:

  • Personal Injury

  • Medical Malpractice

  • Long Term Care/Elder Care

  • Product Liability

  • Toxic Tort

  • Risk Management

  • Insurance

  • Life Care Planning
